How To Measure A Grille

Overall Size

Measure the size of the duct opening. Do not measure the old vent cover. If your duct opening is 14" wide by 20" tall, order a 14x20

Height vs. Width

The first number in a grille size represents the width, the secondnumber represents the height.

Installation

HVAC Installation FAQs.

You should replace your HVAC filters every 30 days to keep your air healthy and your HVAC system running efficiently. To help you, here’s a simple guide to changing your filters for vent registers:

1. Turn your HVAC unit off.

2. Slide the tabs to open the door on your air filter grille to access the filter.

3. Remove the used or dirty filter.

4. Before installing your new filter, ensure the airflow arrows are pointing in the direction of your unit.

5. Once the filter is installed, close the door on your air filter grille.

6. Turn your HVAC unit on for clean, healthy air.

A 24x24 ceiling return air grille will need a larger frame. For example, if your grille is 24x24 it will in all probability have a 26x26 diameter. This means that the grille will need a 24x24 hole and a 26x26 frame to fit properly.

Installation

Turn off your HVAC unit. Wear protective goggles to keep any dust or dirt particles from falling from the ceiling return air grille and into your eyes. Secure your ladder and then unscrew the frame to remove the grille. Next, put the frame in place and secure it with screws. Install the new grille to complete the task.

First off, a 20x20 decorative air return grille will require a larger frame for optimum installation. This means that a 20x20 decorative air return grille with 22x22 dimensions will need a 20x20 hole and a 22x22 frame to fit properly.

Once you've got the sizes sorted, unscrew the frame and then take out the grille. Next, put the frame in place and secure it with screws. Once that’s done, install the new grille to complete the task.

1. Measure the size of the vent hole and the frame to ensure you purchase the correct grille size. A return air filter grille with a 20x20 size and 22x22 dimensions will require a 20x20 hole and a 22x22 frame.

2. Unscrew the frame and then remove the grille. Position the frame and secure it with screws. Once the frame is in place, install the new grille to complete the task.

Screw out the old grille, and then unpackage and screw in your new grille. All HVAC Premium grilles come with either black or white hex head screws to match the color of your grille. If you're installing a filter model, you'll need to open the filter grille and find the holes at the sides to screw into the wall. Once you close the filter door, the screws won't be noticeable.

The most commonly used material is steel because it's strong and economical. However, if your grille is located in a humid place — such as next to a sauna, swimming pool, or in a bathroom — plastic or aluminum materials are the common materials used. Plastic, however, is at a disadvantage as it lacks strength and can discolor over time. Your best bet for areas with high humidity is aluminum. HVAC Premium has a wide range of aluminum grilles, from Cubic Core to perforated — you can view our selection here.

The steel return air grille is not completely flat. The front service is around ~0.4 inches from the wall, where it covers the opening of the duct.
